Flight

On a flight, I sat in the aisle seat. Next to me, a rabbi. The sun started to set and he asked, “Will you change seats so I can pray? I need to stand.”

We switched. I wanted to watch him. Instead, I rested my elbows on my knees and looked down to give him privacy. That’s when, for the first time in years,
I began to pray.

Father and Son

I greeted my son outside his new job downtown. Soft light. Warm air. He loosened his tie. His leather shoes clicked against the sidewalk. Something rang familiar. I’d seen that after work buzz mixed with exhaustion before. I was 23, meeting my father in Boston after his long day at the office.
