The Library: a Physiological Study

King County, WA (2003-2007)

After spending a year interacting with patrons and staff at the Seattle Public Library I created a performance and a Special Collection of circulating books including 1000 titles that had not left the building in more than ten years. I asked library patrons and staff to check a book out. Introduce it to the other books in your life.

Special Collection: one. two, three, four (60 sec. video), five (60 sec. video), six, seven, eight.

Call to Reference Desk

Hello, I have a question for you. This morning I woke up to the sound of my neighbor snoring on the other side of the wall, then I listened to the radio until lunch and the tv this afternoon so I've heard a lot, but have not spoken. I have not pressed my lips together to form words with my tongue.

There are moments, long moments when I think I have been talking and then realize there is no sound, that it's all just the rattle of things said before.

So anyway, I looked at my watch and saw that it was getting late and if I was going to talk today, if I was going to have a conversation with another human being then now was the time. It's now or I'll have to wait until tomorrow when you open up again.

So that's it really. I don't think I need-Yes that's quite enough. So have a good evening and I'll talk to you tomorrow.
